After lettering a total of seven times in her Penn State Behrend career between indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, Carlsson finds herself in a unique place as a college athlete.

For the Behrend soccer teams, this past weekend was a memorable one. It was AMCC Championship weekend for both teams, and both teams entered the tournament as the number one seed in their conferences, which guaranteed home field for the semi-final and final rounds.

Volleyball dominates on Senior Night

This past Saturday, the Lions hosted the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats at the Junker Center for their senior night game. Behind the instruction and motivation of 15-year head coach Phil Posano, the Lions claimed victory in their final home match, and the seniors certainly played a huge role in their last home game.
Controversy arises in the ALCS

After a masterful start from David Price, the Boston Red Sox dispatched the reigning World Series Champion Houston Astros to advance to the 2018 World Series. The Red Sox advance for the first time since the 2013 season, in which they won the title. The series seemed to be over unceremoniously, from looking at the box scores, with Boston only needing five games to advance. However, the box score fails to show all of the controversies that plagued this series.
Canada legalizes marijuana, NHL maintains policy

This past Wednesday, Canada became the largest country in the world to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. This means it will be available under law in seven more NHL cities, in addition to Denver’s Colorado Avalanche NHL team. This step forward can now help those who believe in the use of marijuana as a form of treatment for healing options.
Soccer teams capture two conference wins

The Penn State Behrend men’s and women’s soccer teams took on Hilbert College in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on a cool and windy Wednesday afternoon this past week. The men’s team defeated Hilbert College by a 10-0 margin and the women shutout the Hawks 8-0.

The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team began practice this past Wednesday. Heading into the 2018-19 campaign, the roster lists five seniors, but does not list all the seniors that will be a part of the program. Although he was unable to suit up in the 2017-18 season and may not play again, Matt Colpoys is an important senior in the Behrend basketball program for numerous reasons.
Water Polo takes third at DIII Championship

The Penn State Behrend men’s water polo team took part in the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Division III Eastern Championships in Baltimore, Maryland this past weekend. The Lions faced three tough opponents during the two-day tournament and were able to come away with two victories, losing only to tournament host Johns Hopkins.

The percentage of high school basketball players that play Division III basketball is just 1.4 percent. The number of high school football players that play Division II football is just 1.8 percent. John (Jack) Relihan, a former basketball player at Marietta College and later here at Penn State Behrend, had the opportunity to play both Division II football along with Division III basketball.

Cross country teams finish in top five at Behrend Invitational

This past weekend, the Penn State Behrend Lions hosted the annual Behrend Invitational cross country meet. Athletes from 11 teams from all over the region gathered to compete in the invitational. NCAA expands roles of agents, attempts to mitigate corruption

On Wednesday this week, Nike released a new advertisement the company had been saving for the NFL season via a Twitter thread. The thread had taglines of the athletes featured in the two minute and six second spread, highlighting obstacles that the athletes have overcome to achieve greatness in their sports. The ad was narrated by and strongly featured Colin Kaepernick, the ex-49ers Quarterback, most known for sparking the ongoing National Anthem debate.

Nate Schmidt appeals controversial PED suspension

Controversy arose from the National Hockey League Monday morning as they announced they had suspended Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt 20 games for testing positive for an illegal substance they classified as a performance-enhancing drug (PED). The substance he tested positive for has not and likely will not be made public, due to a collective bargaining agreement clause with the NHL Players Association.
Volleyball splits four mathces in NW PA Challenge

After splitting four matches in the Morrisville State Tournament in the weekend prior, the Lions faced off against four more tough opponents in the Northwest Pennsylvania (NW PA) Challenge on Friday and Saturday. Again they split their four matches, claiming two solid victories on the first day and suffering narrow defeats on the second. This brings their overall record on the season to 4-4 as they begin regular match play.

Jason Witten retired, and the team surprisingly released kicker Dan Bailey earlier this week, marking the end of their relationship with their most successful kicker in franchise history. The most interesting story though has been Dez Bryant, who still is in the earlier stages of his career.

I played on some outstanding baseball teams growing up that qualified for the Pony League World Series when I was 13 and 14. However, once he started playing soccer that season, he realized he had a future in the sport of soccer and his passion for the sport was greater than he previously realized.
