The Penn State Behrend men’s tennis team has been on a bit of a hot streak. The team has only lost one out of their nine matches the entire month of March, and have only lost three matches this calendar year. This past weekend, the team had two matches against regional foes. On Saturday, the team was on the road facing off against Pitt-Greensburg, winning 8-1. Sunday’s match was home at Behrend against Penn State Altoona, which Behrend won by a 7-2 margin.

Brenden Dollard, sophomore telecommunication major, shared his thoughts on the PSU-Altoona match. Dollard said, “It was cool to play another Penn State team and see how they operate. Since it was another Penn State team there was a friendly rivalry throughout the match. The team in general has been a lot stronger since our team spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina.” The Penn State Behrend men’s tennis team finished their spring break trip back in the beginning of March with a perfect record over that stretch. Behrend ended Sunday’s match with winning three doubles and four singles, giving Penn State Altoona their first conference loss of the season.

Senior player, Yanique Apgar, won at number one singles with 6-2 and 6-0. Apgar teamed up with fellow senior Scott Russell at number one doubles to win 8-4. Apgar and Russell are playing first at doubles and are still undefeated. “Our team has worked a lot on our doubles strategies, especially for the upcoming AMCC finals against Franciscan in April,” said Yanique Apgar, senior communication major. Russell followed his win with Apgar with a three set win at number two singles in three sets.

Dollard and Brent McFarland were the dynamic duo to have an 8-0 sweep at number two doubles. Dollard also claimed victory in third singles with wins consecutive set wins at margins of 6-2 and 6-1. McFarland also had multiple wins today, those coming in second doubles and fourth singles in straight sets. Noah Colvin and Michael Duckett got the final doubles win for the team with an 8-3 score.

The men’s tennis team is filled with talent and they are definitely showing it with their honorable season. “We have been in great shape since the beginning of the season and only seem to be getting better,” said Apgar. The energy the Lions have been bringing to the court can be felt from the audience. This team is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

The Lions are taking a little bit of a break and will return to the court on April 7. The match will be here at Behrend and is set for 3:30 p.m. against Mt. Aloysius. This will be the men’s last home match of the year, so be sure to go cheer them on to victory.
