Behrend welcomes new coaches

While most were vacationing on beaches or traveling to far off places, your Behrend Lions were still staying busy during the summer. There are many new faces joining the athletic staff here at Behrend for this upcoming fall sports season. Joining the men’s soccer team as the assistant coach is David Krems. David is bringing multiple years of experience with him, previously serving as an assistant coach at Case Western Reserve University and Notre Dame University. He also served on the coaching staff at Hiram College and Xavier University.

The women’s soccer team also has named a new assistant coach for this fall season. Although she is new to the position, she is not new to the team or to Behrend. Shelby Lloyd, a Behrend graduate from the Class of 2015, has served as the Graduate Assistant for the past two seasons and this year has been hired as the full-time assistant coach. Before making her return to Behrend, Lloyd was the head coach of the women’s soccer team at Beaver High School and also worked for the Beaver Area School District. The ladies’ coaching staff will also gain another Behrend graduate as Jordan Oberlander will be a volunteer coach for this upcoming season.

For the spring season, the men’s baseball team will be welcoming a new assistant coach by the name of Anthony Fanelli. Fanelli has a couple years of coaching under his belt before joining the Lions coaching staff. Previously working at Seton Hill for the last two years, Fanelli served as the hitting coach, instructed catchers and assisted with recruiting.

While Behrend athletes are normally praised for their work on the court or field, this summer they were praised for their work in the classroom. Both the men’s baseball team and the men’s and women’s track and field team won awards for academic excellence.

Also, there is notable alumni news for the fall. Seven Behrend alumni athletes were inducted into the Behrend Hall of Fame. The members inducted include: Kevin Buczynski ('08), Dustin Fairchild ('08), John Fleming ('76), Kristin Macha ('07), Allison Mudrey ('08), Anthony Spoto ('08), and Brittany Yost ('07).

Another noteworthy athletic alumni this year is Pat St. Andrews. After graduating Behrend in 2013 with a masters in business administration and having already earned two bachelor degrees (business economics and international business), he began his career in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks as a seasonal assistant. He then worked as their head video coordinator, and eventually worked his way up to the assistant coaching position. St. Andrews has officially been named the assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2018-2019 season.

It is clear that Behrend definitely had a proud and accomplished off-season this past summer, leaving nothing but excitement and anticipation for the new athletic season to start. The Lions are already hard at work training for their first steps on the field, court and track this fall. Make sure you go out to show your support!
