Soccer teams capture two
conference wins

The Penn State Behrend men’s and women’s soccer teams took on Hilbert College in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on a cool and windy Wednesday afternoon this past week. The men’s team defeated Hilbert College by a 10-0 margin and the women shutout the Hawks 8-0.

The men’s soccer team defeated Hilbert by double digits, and the Lions started the scoring early, during the seventh minute in fact. Senior Nick McKee scored the first goal of the game and his first goal of the season, while Logan Brinsky added a second goal just 14 seconds later, which netted his team leading the sixth goal of the campaign. Richard Blanchard added his second goal of the season just a minute later, which gave the Lions a 4-0 advantage. Jason Angelo gave Penn State Behrend a 6-0 lead after scoring two goals in a row before half time.

During the second half of the game, Dan Irwin pushed the score to 7-0 with his first goal of the season. Kole Lisovich, Matthew Romesburg and Tyler Opferman each scored one goal during the second half of the game. The Lions outshot the Hawks 51-3 in the game the combined efforts of Bobby Vanetta, Steven Pufpaff and Matt Warnaka recorded a shutout.

The women’s soccer delivered an excellent offensive effort during their game as well. The Lions remain undefeated in the AMCC. Seven different players scored in the 8-0 victory. The Lions scored a season-best six goals during the first half and attained the highest offensive output for the Lions this season, which matches the most goals that Behrend has scored against Hilbert College in program history.

Emily Indof, a sophomore forward, led the team with two goals and one assist while Nicol Kittelberger scored a goal and an assist during the game, her first points of her career and season. Ava Michael, freshmen defender, tallied her first collegiate goal, which gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the game. Ashlyn Whipple also added another goal and an assist. Madi Jones and Dana DiCamillo combined for two saves and Behrend’s eight shutout of the 2018 campaign.

On Saturday, the Lions also had a critical AMCC matchup at Mount Aloysius. Mount Aloysius men’s team came into the game with the most wins in the AMCC, while the women’s team furthered AMCC lead against the Mounties. The men’s and women’s soccer teams both battled to narrow 1-0 victories in the AMCC Game of the Week.

In the men’s game, Michael DiCola capitalized in a defensive mistake early in the first half to score the lone goal of the game. This helped to improve the Lions to a 7-0-1 conference record and seal another conference title.

For the women, Ashlyn Whipple received a pass from Lexie Frank and ripped one from the point to score, while Jones recorded yet another shutout on four saves. This sealed the AMCC regular season win and improved their conference record to 8-0.
One game yet remains. The teams will conclude their seasons with road matchups against the D’Youville Spartans on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.
