This past week, the men’s and women’s soccer teams took on Grove City College and LaRoche College. The men’s team faced the Grove City Wolverines this past Tuesday. It was an eventful match ending in a 1-0 score with the Lions falling to the Wolverines. Grove City’s defense shut down the Behrend offense throughout the game, allowing only five shots in the game. Their offense finally broke through in the last ten minutes when Jon Burton scored off of a penalty kick, Chris Ralph’s lone goal allowed on eight shots on goal.

The women’s soccer team also had a tough battle in Grove City. The Lions fell to the Wolverines 4-0, with Grove City scoring two goals in the first half and two in the second half. Grove City took command of the field early in the match in scoring two goals off of three shots in the first half. Ruby Mattson and Brooke Thomas added two more goals for the Wolverines in the second half to seal the win. Behrend tallied 13 shots on the day with three of them getting on goal.

Both teams were back on the road again Saturday as they traveled to Pittsburgh to face off with the La Roche College Red Hawks. The men’s team took down the Red Hawks by a four-goal margin. They scored early in the game and took command of the field right away after senior Ryan Maurer scored in the first 15 minutes of the game. The Lions took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half when sophomore Ryan Blanchard scored just five minutes later. Sophomore Christian Eckberg and junior Aaron Harris were credited with the assists on Blanchard’s goal. Starting the second half, Maurer notched another goal off of a penalty kick, making him 2-2 in penalty kicks for this season. Towards the end of the second half freshman Logan Brinsky scored twice, his first career goals. The Lions dominated on the offensive end, outshooting La Roche 20-6 in the game.

The women’s team was also able to bring home a success story from their match this weekend, rising above the Red Hawks 5-2. Sophomore Emily Indof had an unbelievable game, putting up a hat-trick in Saturday’s match. Freshman Brenna McGuire accounted for the other two goals for Behrend. Freshman Haley Huber and junior Ashlyn Whipple assisted on Indof’s last two goals. This win was likely very refreshing for the team, as they broke a four-game losing streak.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams will be back on the field Tuesday evening. Both teams are taking on the Mavericks of Medaille College right here at Behrend Field. The women’s game takes place at 5 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 p.m. Attendees will receive a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich, provided there are some left.
