Water polo loses two, falls to 1-11

This past weekend, the Penn State Behrend men’s water polo team was on the road for yet another tournament that could change the momentum of their season. They were coming off of an important tournament at Connecticut College, where the Lions won their first match of the season against the hosting team. Later in the tournament, Behrend ended up falling to three other schools including Iona College, Cal Lutheran University and MIT University. After the weekend the Lions had they went into this past weekend’s tournament hungry for their second win.

On Friday, the Lions traveled to Gannon University for their match against the Golden Knights. The match ended with Behrend falling to Gannon by a score of 20-7. Freshman goalie, Alijah Santangelo, was able to tally 11 saves while also managing two steals. Junior Isaak Hatopp additionally contributed two goals in the match for the Lions. Hatopp is a strong and reliable player for the Lions, with regular goals and steals in each match. Also putting up two goals for Behrend this past Friday was Lake Forest Graduate, freshman Collin Holmes.

On Saturday, Penn State Behrend was back in their home pool as they faced off against McKendree University. In goal for the Lions on Saturday was sophomore Matt Olimski. Olimski was able to manage eight saves and three steals. Unfortunately, it was not enough to bring Behrend a victory. The match ended with McKendree defeating Behrend 23-7. Hatopp and Andre Sardaryzadeh led the offense in scoring for the day, as they each put 2 shots on goal. Also, junior Austin Hoff pulled off three steals in the match.

After this weekend’s matches, the men’s water polo record for the season is 1-11. They have a week to get ready for the Gary Troyer Tournament this upcoming weekend. The Lions will be on the road and traveling to Southern California for this weekend’s events. The tournament could bring the Lions the victories they have been looking for, as they have two matches on Friday and two matches on Saturday. Just as well, they will travel to Baltimore for the DIII Eastern Championships later in the month. Be sure to wish them luck as they hit the road. They will be back playing in the Junker Center on Thursday, October 18th, against Washington and Jefferson for their next home match.
