The Behrend women’s water polo team partook in the second Collegiate Water Polo Association Regional Tournament of the year this past weekend at Monmouth University. The team had a fairly competitive first day, taking one of the two matches by an 11-point margin before losing in overtime in their subsequent match. On the second day, the team was only able to muster one goal in a 14-1 loss to the Macalester Scots. This brings the team’s overall record to 6-9 on the year.

The tournament started off well enough for the Lions as they claimed victory over the Utica Pioneers 15-4. Jenessa Islas-Parker got Behrend started with a goal within the first minute and a half, and the Lions did not look back from there, as they lead 4-1 after a period. Devon Van Rensburg had two goals in the second period and helped Behrend take a 10-4 lead into the half. The Behrend defense and netminder Holly Rae Hanson shutout the Utica offense in the second half. Additionally, Maryn Horn tallied five goals and dished out four assists en route to the win.

In the second match of the day, the Lions took one on the chin to the Monmouth Fighting Scots. Monmouth had a six-point lead heading into the second half, holding the Lions to a single goal, which was scored by JoJo Gager in the second period.  Alison McClure, Carson Hagood and Horn scored in the fourth to lessen the margin, but it was all for naught in the 12-6 loss. McClure and Lauren Wood combined for nine saves in the match. Horn set the Behrend career record for goals with her one goal in the match, bringing her total to 149 total goals.

On the final day of the tournament, Behrend suffered a double digit loss, falling to Monmouth. It took less than a minute into the match for the Fighting Scots to take the early lead. The Scots held Behrend without a goal in the first half in taking a 9-0 lead into the third period. Monmouth goalie Courtney Overland made 16 total saves in the match, nine of which were in the first half. Lauren Wood netted the lone Lions goal in the second period.

The team will have their final match of the regular season at home against Mercyhurst. Game time is 7 p.m. in the Junker Center.
