After a much anticipated boxing bout between undefeated Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, it looks as if the two may meet again, this time in the octagon. Rumors have been circulating this prior week that Mayweather would consider facing off against McGregor in an octagon with a few modified changes to the rulebook. These modified rules would not allow takedowns, clinching, kicking and a few other physical aspects that make battling in the octagon different from boxing. Many are calling Floyd’s proposal outrages, and merely giving him an advantage making it much like boxing in the octagon.

Back in August 2017, Mayweather and McGregor faced off in the boxing ring where Floyd would go on to win the bout by TKO in the tenth round. The much anticipated match was worthwhile for both fighters, as Floyd was guaranteed $100 million and McGregor made a guaranteed $30 million in his very first boxing match. After the first bout, everyone was and is looking forward to a rematch, especially in an octagon. Floyd would be out of his comfort zone, but many spectators would love to see the undefeated fighter take his first loss ever.

Although rumors are circulating, McGregor cannot hop into the octagon just yet. Last Saturday at the Barclay Center, McGregor caused a bit of an uproar as he and his buddies attacked fellow UFC fighters on their tour bus. This occurred at the UFC 223 press conference, where the fighters gather to discuss their upcoming matches. McGregor and his group rushed the tour bus throwing garbage cans, chairs, and even dollys. A few UFC fighters sustained minor injuries but nothing critical.

McGregor has since turned himself in to the New York Police Department. He appeared in criminal court in Brooklyn, where he faces three counts of misdemeanor assault and one felony count of criminal mischief for his involvement in the incident. He was released on $50,000 bail and awaits his final fate in a Brooklyn court. Longtime friend and UFC President Dana White was very upset with McGregor and his actions. He claims it was not a smart move by McGregor, who is arguably the biggest athlete in the UFC and possibly in American sports today. He was also quite upset that McGregor would put his fellow UFC colleagues in harm's way jeopardizing the advancement of the sport. Needless to say, McGregor has many legal obstacles to face before fighting again.

When asked about the modified rule changes, Dana White dismissed Mayweather’s requests, insinuating that it would be a discredit to the sport for such modified changes to be applied. UFC mixed martial arts is a very physical sport that takes pride in the contact and melee. Fighters often fight until one or the other taps out or is knocked out. Blood is a normal occurrence when engaged in the octagon. It is still up in the air if this fight will happen with modified rule changes, but it is not likely. With Mayweather needing modified rules and McGregor tied up in the legal system, the chances this rematch occurs are slim, at least in the near future.
