Women's soccer team captures AMCC title

The AMCC women’s soccer championship is staying with the Penn State Behrend Lions for the sixth straight year with their victory over Pitt Greensburg.

Behrend played Pitt Greensburg for the title at Behrend fields, and came out victorious with a score of six to one on Saturday afternoon. The soccer team made history, by becoming the first team in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) history to win six straight titles. This championship was also the program’s 12th conference championship in their 20 years in the AMCC. The win extended the Lions’ winning streak to 12 straight games, as they continued their hot play from the regular season into the playoffs.

The game was knotted up at 1 after the first half, but that didn’t last long when Jordan Oberlander, a junior, scored the eventual game winner seven minutes into the second half. Junior Olivia Belack, and Senior Alex Bilka, each scored two goals after Oberlander, which left the bobcats stunned by the five unanswered goals. Belack also made history, setting a new school record for most assists in a season with 12. For the three seniors on the team, they have won an AMCC title each year they played, and are leaving huge shoes to fill for all underclassmen. McKenna Aleksivich, a junior, said, “It was awesome to win this for our seniors who have worked hard to continue this successful legacy. It was also great to win it for the alums, some of whom were in attendance.”

Before having the chance to win the AMCC title, the Lions had to face Mt. Aloysius on November 2 at the Behrend Fields. They beat Mt. Aloysius four to nothing. Bilka and Oberlander both scored twice to help the lions past Mt. A giving the team the opportunity to play for the championship. Goal keeper Sam Morlacci, from Shady Side Academy, had three saves during the game making it her fifth win of the season, and the team’s ninth shutout of the year.

The AMCC All-tournament team consisted of Sophomore Laura Schaefer, Oberlander, and Junior Sami Lowry for their efforts in the semi-finals against Mt. Aloysius and in the championship game against Pitt Greensburg. With this win the Lions earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. They will play Thomas More, winners of the Presidents Athletic Conference, on Friday at 2 p.m. in Crestview Hills Kentucky.
