Vollyball continues hot streak, wins two of three

The Behrend Women’s Volleyball team continued to improve in conference play with two out of three match wins this past weekend. After starting the week with a close loss to D’Youville, the Lions bounced back with consecutive victories against La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg, improving their overall record to 13-11 with a 3-3 record in conference play.

Behrend suffered a heartbreaking loss to the D’Youville Spartans early in the week, which snapped the Lions’ six match winning streak. It was a back-and-forth contest, with D’Youville getting out to a one set lead twice, only for the Lions to tie it each time. D’Youville took a close final set by six points, giving them the match three sets to two. Behrend did have a strong showing, though. Rachel Frye led the team with 14 kills and 15 overall points in the match. Hannah Saunders additionally had a quality match, recording 7 kills, 12 digs, and 10 points. For D’Youville, Kendyll Smith led the Spartans with 15.5 points on 14 kills. Meghan Schneider and McKenna Cartonia also had strong matches, recording 11.5 points on 18 digs and 2 points on 16 digs, respectively.

The Lions bounced back with sound wins in their two matches in Pittsburgh against La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg. The Lions edged out La Roche in five sets to claim their eighth win in nine matches. Behrend won the first two sets fairly handily, by scores of 25-22 and 25-14, before the La Roche Redhawks claimed the next two sets by slim margins, forcing a fifth set in which the Lions claimed a five-point victory and one-set match win. Rachel Frye again delivered a phenomenal performance, tallying 16 points on 16 kills and 5 digs. Amanda Henry additionally delivered match-changing production with 12.5 points on 10 kills and 14 digs. Madison Klapper held perhaps the most astonishing statistic, tallying 24 total digs in the match, along with 3 points.

Behrend had no trouble against Pitt-Greensburg, sweeping them in straight sets by comfortable margins, to say the least. The Lions took the first set by a commanding 25-5 score, scoring 19 out if the final 20 points in the set, following it up by consecutive nine-point wins. Behrend did have some trouble closing out the second set after getting out to a thirteen-point lead. Pitt-Greensburg did make a decent shot at a comeback, but ultimately fell short and lost by nine. Amanda Henry again delivered a strong performance, recording 9 points on 5 digs and 8 kills. Keely Hering and Madison Clapper each had 13 digs and recorded 4 and 3 points, respectively. Hannah Saunders also served up 18 aces and tallied 8.5 total points.

The Behrend Lions volleyball team finishes up their regular season soon with three final matches against conference opponents. This coming Saturday, get out and cheer on the Lions as they battle Franciscan at 1 p.m. in Junker. Behrend finishes off the season with a road match against Medaille on the 25th and a home match against Mt. Aloysius on the 28th at 1 p.m., and will likely need to win out to have any chance to overtake current AMCC Conference leader Penn State-Altoona.
