On this day in sports history...

On October 17, 1979, the Pittsburgh Pirates won their fifth World Series, beating the Baltimore Orioles in Game 7, capping off a historic comeback after being down three games to one in the series. Pirate pitchers Jim Bibby, Don Robinson, Grant Jackson and Kent Tekulve combined for a 4 hit, 1 run shutdown of the Baltimore offense, with the only run coming off a solo shot to left field. Down 1-0 going into the top of 6th inning, the Pirates were given a boost by a two run home run off the bat of Willie Stargell. The Bucs added two more runs in the top of the 9th, as Omar Moreno had an RBI single and Bill Robinson was shortly after hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Moreno. Kent Tekulve earned the save in the bottom of the 9th and the rest is history. The Pirates have not won a World Series since and, honestly do not appear to be doing so anytime soon.

Pirate greate Willie Stargell played a key role in each of the Pirates World Series wins in the 1970s ('71 and '79).
