Behrend soccer stays undefeated in conference play

Over the weekend, Penn State Behrend’s women’s and men’s soccer teams were in action against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) opponent, Penn State Altoona. Both teams won their matches decisively, remaining undefeated in AMCC play. While both teams put up impressive margins of victory, the Lady Lions (9-4, 4-0 AMCC) were relentless in their attack.

Eight separate players helped the Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team surpass Altoona (4-9, 2-3 AMCC) by a score of 11-1 on Saturday. The win is the Lions fifth in a row and is their fourth straight conference win. Things only got worse as the game went on for Altoona, as the Lions scored four goals in the first half and seven in the second.

Jordan Oberländer, Amanda Donohue, and Nicole Evans each racked up a pair of goals in the landslide win.

Lexie Frank and Sami Lowry linked up for the first goal of the game during the twenty-ninth minute of the first half. Evans pounded a shot to the top right corner, beating Altoona goalie Sydney Emershaw to extended the lead 2-0.

Altoona cut into the lead during the thirty-ninth minute, but Evans responded thirty seconds later with her second of the day. Ashlyn Whipple would snag the final goal of the first half around the fortieth minute off a pass from Lydia McCaleb. Her precise touch to the top left corner sent Behrend to the half with a 4-1 lead.

To open the second half, Oberlander and Donohue went on a frenzy, extending Behrend’s lead to an 8-1 advantage. The goal spree all took place in a span of about ten minutes with Oberlander striking first with two, followed by Donohue with two of her own. Cassidy Ulanowicz and Kayla Williams tallied goals in the 71st and 78th minute, their first collegiate career goals, while Angela Baranowski took home her first goal of the season, leading to the Lions 11-1 victory.

The Behrend men’s team (9-4, 4-0 AMCC) also put on an impressive offensive performance Saturday afternoon, holding off the Altoona men’s team (3-10, 3-2) for a 6-1 victory.

Ryan Maurer and Matt Baleno linked up early for Maurer’s first collegiate career goal just five minutes into the match. Maurer then floated a long ball to Richard Blanchard to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Behrend wouldn’t score again till just after the thirtieth minute, when Ryan Segar headed the ball past off an Andrew Mastovich cross. Altoona found its only goal of the game two minutes later.

Matt Dziadosz dished out a pair of assists in the second half, giving Behrend its fourth and fifth goals of the game. With only seven minutes remaining, Cole Ferguson wrapped up the scoring for the Lions, roping a shot into the back of the goal.

Both teams are back in action this Tuesday when they play Hilbert at home. The men’s game kickoffs at 5 p.m. and the women’s game will follow at 7:30 p.m. Make sure you get out and support both teams tonight as they look to continue their undefeated conference streaks!
