Baseball lifts conference record to

7-3, sweep Bradford

This past week, the baseball team went 2-2 in conference play, bringing their conference record to 7-3, over halfway through conference play.

The University of Pittsburgh Bradford traveled to Behrend for a pair of games. In game one, the Lion’s offense took over in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs to break a one-all tie. After an error by the Panther’s shortstop, Scott Sada was able to advance home for a score. Junior, David Boehme drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing for another Behrend run. Junior, catcher, Zach Murray singled and two batters later, Brandon Bergstrom scored two runs after hitting a single. Phil Myers recorded his fourth win of the season. As the game went on, Myers got stronger and never allowed more than one hit per inning. The sophomore finished with five strikeouts over seven innings. The Lions would defeat the Panthers by the score of 6-1.

The second game was much closer compared to the first one. Freshman, Benjamin Ramey had two sacrifice bunts, both leading to scoring runs to help the Lions get the 2-1 lead. When the game was tied up at one at the bottom of the eighth, Ramey’s bunt moved Murray to third. Bergstrom then made a huge play with a hit to middle, which led Murray to the game winning run. Bergstrom recorded both RBIs in the game, finishing out the day, 2-for-6 at the plate and four RBIs. Senior, pitcher Justin Rohrer threw a complete game, to add his fourth win on the season.

On Friday afternoon, Behrend traveled to The University of Pittsburgh Greensburg, where they would leave with two losses.

Game one did not start off like Behrend would have wanted by falling behind early in the game. The Bobcats hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and then added another hit to third. Behrend could not overcome the Greensburg lead, despite adding a run in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Boehme went 2-for-2 for the game with one RBI.

The second game started off similar to the first with Behrend getting behind early, they but were able to recover by tying the game in the sixth inning with a score of 2-2. Murray stepped up the plate with the bases loaded, and singled out to middle field to bring in two Behrend runs. The Lions would add three more runs in the next inning to take their first lead of the day. It was not enough to stay ahead of the Bobcats, after they would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the ninth, down by one, Greensburg hit back to back homers for a walk-off win and a final score of 6-5.

Behrend will look to get back in the win column this Tuesday when they host Allegheny College for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m at the Behrend Fields.
