Amanda Donohue reflects on Behrend career

One word comes to mind when many of the Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team in AMCC play: dominant. The women’s soccer program is one of the best in the region, and their seven consecutive AMCC Championships is proof that they have a great tradition going at Penn State Behrend. One girl who was a key asset in her time here and won four AMCC Championships was forward Amanda Donohue. The Seneca Valley High School graduate had a fantastic senior season that included eight goals and six assists. It’s easy to see why Donohue was Second Team All AMCC Selection in her senior campaign, but it was not always smooth sailing for Donohue to be a college soccer player.

Donohue grew up in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, and she was a 2014 graduate of Seneca Valley High School. Attending Seneca Valley made Donohue a competitive person in everything she did. “I graduated with so many people that academics and athletics were very competitive at my high school,” she stated. She had great success as a softball player, track runner and soccer player in high school. She also played a lot of soccer with many different club teams. One team she played for was Arsenal, and while with this team, she was discovered by Behrend soccer coach Patrick O’Driscoll. She was able to earn four varsity letters as a member of the Behrend soccer team, and also was an AMCC and ECAC Player of the Week recipient in her senior campaign. While Donohue was a great asset to the soccer team, she is also a fantastic student and has enjoyed a lot of great success in her young professional career.

Donohue is currently a marketing intern for the Erie Bayhawks basketball team, and she had an internship with Sheetz in Altoona over the summer. Amanda would love to be a manager for Sheetz in the future, but she is keeping her options open at this point. In addition to her internship experience, she is also a member of Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, and has met one specific friend who persuaded her to double major in Marketing and Management Information Systems. Haley Lacullo is a Behrend graduate who had a great impact on Donohue. “She influenced me to pursue this double major. I always admired her work ethic, and it influenced me to want to work as hard as she did. She was a great mentor to me,” she stated. While Lacullo influenced her academically, there are a few other people in her life who have also played a huge role in helping Donohue find success in all of her endeavors.

Donohue’s former teammate Shelby Lloyd continues to impact her on a daily basis. Lloyd is currently the Graduate Assistant for the women’s soccer team, and she is someone who continually gets the best out of every player. Her grandmother was also someone she admired a lot growing up. Donohue said, regarding her grandmother, “My grandma was a successful school teacher, and she is someone who is always smiling and brings a positive mindset to everyone.” While Donohue has a lot of people she has looked up to and learned from over the years, there are a lot of memories with her colleagues and teammates she will also cherish.

Her favorite memories with her team include four AMCC Championships, watching the sunrise at 6 a.m. practices, and also the trip to Europe, which included games in four different countries. One memory this season she enjoyed the most was her game winning goal against Case Western. In her time at Behrend, Donohue was able to play with about forty different teammates. “I am very fortunate to have had so many teammates because I met some of my greatest friends through playing soccer,” she said of her teammates.

Donohue has had an excellent career both on the field and in her time as a Penn State Behrend student. She plans to return home to Pittsburgh area to seek employment, and she is hopeful she can become a regional manager for Sheetz one day. She has no immediate plans to stay involved with the game of soccer upon graduation this May, but she plans to play some pickup soccer and also possibly coach her kids in the future. Donohue enjoyed great success in every activity she was involved in throughout her college career, and she surely will find success in all endeavors in the future.
