Being a good golfer is truly one of the most underappreciated skills in the business world. A large amount of business is discussed while playing a round of golf. While not every executive or business person is the next Tiger Woods, there is one young businessman who will turn heads of some executives out on the course for his superb golf knowledge and skill. This man is none other than Behrend junior Zac McCue.

McCue or “Cue” to many of his teammates and friends is originally from Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania and a 2015 graduate of Slippery Rock Area High School. McCue was a three sport athlete in high school competing in track and field, basketball and of course golf. He was a four year letterwinner in golf, and his team won their region in District 10 his freshman and sophomore year. In addition, McCue qualified for the individual District 10 tournament his junior and senior season. “Growing up in Slippery Rock with a great group of friends was very memorable. My group of friends were all athletic, hard working, and also intelligent. We pushed each other to achieve our best in everything we were involved in,” McCue stated.

When asked about how he fell in love with the sport of golf, McCue spoke about both of his grandpa’s and his father’s teaching him about the game and helping him improve his game.

“My ‘Pap’, grandad and dad are all passionate golfers, and the game of golf helped me and continues to help me build a stronger relationship with all of them. My grandpa Jim McCue and I would golf every Sunday together if the weather was nice. My grandpa Lyle Robinson and I would golf together each Tuesday in the summer in a local church league. I learned a lot of great advice about golf from them, but I also learned from them how to be successful, work hard, and also how to have fun playing the game.” His grandpa Lyle was a businessman for Huntington Bank, while his grandpa Jim worked at AK Steel.

Another influence on McCue since coming to Penn State Behrend is Behrend Golf Coach Erik Barzeski. “Coach Barzeski has so much knowledge about the game of golf and he continues to share with our team. He has made me a better golfer, and he challenges every member of our team to play at their best each round,” he said of Barzeski.

Along with Barzeski, McCue’s teammate Sean Sculley is another great role model. When speaking of their relationship, he stated “Sculley has been one of the best golfers on our team in our three years here, and he is such a fundamentally sound golfer. He has taught me better technique, and he helps me find ways to improve my all around game.”

McCue has been a part of three AMCC Championship teams in his time here at Behrend, and has been consistently in the starting lineup for the Lions over his three years. His favorite memories as a collegiate golfer include the trips to Rochester, NY for NCAA Regionals and the trips to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during Spring Break each year. “I especially enjoyed the trip to Myrtle Beach my Sophomore season because we went to train, but we also got to compete against other college teams. It was a nice escape from school and the cold weather,” he said.

His favorite personal accolade every year has been making the team, as he said “It is a lot of hard work, and it is a stressful week of trying to play your best golf. I am fortunate to have played well enough each year to make the team.” While McCue has had a lot of great success in golf, he has had a great start to his professional career as well.

McCue has already had three different internships in his field of Project and Supply Chain Management. His internships include working for Dixon Golf as a Territory Manager, Logistics Plus and he will be starting his third internship this summer at Bechtel Plant Machinery. “I love each one of these jobs for a different reason. They have all brought me a different experience that I will use as I continue my career,” he said. McCue works for Logistics Plus during the school year for 12 hours a week. In addition, he works for Dixon Golf a few hours a week from his computer. “I am thankful that these jobs are flexible with my golf and school schedule because it allows me to complete my courses, play collegiate golf, and also get more work experience all at the same time,” he stated of his many jobs.

Zac McCue has a great passion for golf, and he has had a lot of individual and team success in his three years at Behrend. He continues to find ways to gain experience in the field of Project and Supply Chain Management, and even has a job in which he can incorporate golf and his major all at the same time.

McCue is a fan of all the Pittsburgh sports teams, and his favorite golfers include Rory Mcilroy, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. He is anxious to get back outside and back onto the course this spring to continue to career. He and the Behrend Lions have been working on their game in local indoor facilities for the last several months, and they are all anxious to start competing once again. McCue has had a successful athletic and professional career so far, and he is hopeful that he can continue to incorporate golf in his professional career in some way.
