Behrend Sailing Club finds early success

Last Sunday, the Behrend Sailing Club made the trek down to Yellow Creek, PA for the yearly IUP Regatta. Also in attendance for the races where the IUP and Pittsburgh Sailing Clubs. The races began around 12 p.m. and ran until 4 p.m.

With Caroline Marshyna as Skipper and Noah Feister as her crew member, Penn State was able to gain first place finishes. Additionally,  boats lead by Peter Dotchev and crewed by Pat Hagan and Michael Dobransky earned second place finishes against the opposing teams. The teams were unfortunately meet with strong winds that caused their boats to capsize, which lead to many of the races being postponed for several minutes.  However, as the day would progress, the winds continued to gain strength, which would lead to another boat capsizing; this boat would be the sign to call it quits, both because of time and because the strength of the winds.

The Behrend Sailing Team has their home practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Erie Yacht Club. The team partners with the Gannon Sailing Team during practices, as Gannon practices at that same location. During their practices, the teams will work on their maneuvers and reading the winds, while gaining a better understanding of their boats in the process.

The Behrend Sailing Team also has bi-weekly meetings in the Burke Building located on campus. Here, the team goes over boat parts, and also passes out any information that is needed to be a part of the team and for the information about the races that they take part in. The Club President and Vice President are Caroline Marshyna and Chris Ruppen, respectively, and the club advisor is Sharon Dale. Although the club is a fairly new club to the Behrend college, it is true though that this club defiantly has something to offer, both for the student body and for the Penn State Community as a whole.
