Soccer continues dominance conference play

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams picked up two more wins in the past week, improving their records to 13-4 with an undefeated 8-0 record within the AMCC Conference. The Lions were able to capture slim wins over conference rival Pitt-Bradford and round out the week with shutout wins against La Roche, giving the Behrend teams great momentum to build off of heading into the AMCC Tournament.

The Behrend women overcame a 1-0 halftime lead against Pitt-Bradford this past Wednesday to obtain a slim one-goal victory, while also clinching the number one seed in the AMCC playoffs in the process. Behrend could not capitalize on any of their offensive attempts in the first half, only registering four shots on goal while logging five corner kicks. Scoring about four minutes before the half, Pitt-Bradford did not hold their lead long, as Jordan Oberlander assisted on an Emily Scaletta goal, tying the all-time Behrend single season scoring record. A little later on in the half, Amanda Donohue scored on a rocket from outside the box. Behrend outshot the Panthers by seven in the second half, controlling the game and making their defense’s and goalie’s job easy on the way to the win.

Jordan Oberlander led the women's team past La Roche on Saturday as well, scoring two goals and officially capturing the all-time Behrend Women’s regular season scoring title, at 57 total points. La Roche could not spoil Behrend’s Senior Day, as they were never really able to get anything going on offense, despite their solid defensive and goalie play. Nine seniors played their last regular season home game on Saturday for Behrend, among them being the aforementioned Jordan Oberlander, Olivia Belack, Rachel Weyland, and Sami Lowry. Behrend once again controlled the pace of the game, consistently staying aggressive and tallying 17 shots to La Roche’s 7. Each of the goals were about ten minutes apart in the second half. Oberlander scored her 25th and 26th goals of the season, just barely sliding the insurance goal past the goalie’s outstretched hand, which sealed the 2-0 win. She was assisted by fellow seniors Olivia Belack, who left the game in the second half with an injury, and Amanda Donohue, respectively.

The Behrend men’s team was additionally dominant this past week, picking up a 3-1 win against Pitt-Bradford and a 2-0 win versus La Roche. The Lions got out to a quick lead after Matt Dziadosz scored his seventh goal of the year at the nine-minute mark. Two goals, that came late in each half, from Nick Schwarzel buried the Panthers. They were Schwartzel's first two goals of the year, and were they ever important to the success of the team. Behrend held Pitt-Bradford to five total shots, with the only one on goal netting the panthers their lone goal.

The men’s Lions’ squad also celebrated their Senior Day on Saturday, with Josh Kolarac, Matt Dziadosz, and Matt Baleno going out in style. This game went much like the Pitt-Bradford game with the offense generating opportunity after opportunity, forcing La Roche goalie Abdullah Aljundi to make some phenomenal saves just to keep his team in the game. In the end though, it did not matter, as Behrend goalie Chris Ralph manned his seventh shutout this season, stopping three shots. Both of the Lions’ goals came off of corner kicks, with James Young notching his first tally of the year and Nick McGee notching his third, which barely crossed the goal line after Aljundi deflected the shot. Ryan Maurer and Matt Dziadosz picked up the assists, and Behrend recorded its tenth win at home.

The Behrend Lions will close out the regular season on the road against conference rival Medaille. The men’s game is at 11:30 a.m. and the women’s game at 2 p.m. A victory for the men’s team seals the first place seed in the AMCC heading into conference playoffs, which starts on November 1st.
