Advice for new students

When I was a little girl, my father told me that there were only two rules: 1) obey all the rules and 2) “memoryize” all the rules. My dad was a professor (Early Childhood Education) and a very smart man, but I did not teach my children or grandchildren those rules. I taught them my mother’s rules instead. She was a math professor and is a very wise woman, and she had three rules. I teach her rules to my students. I will not have any of you in class this year, so I am sharing them with you now.

This year’s celebration of Dinner for Six, a Thanksgiving like event put on by Behrend drew a sizable amount of students, faculty, and community members. The event not only brought tangible donations but also provided a platform for those doing work in the community to bring relevant information to the attention of students and other community members.

WE ARE seventy years old and still growing

In 1948, Penn State University received the nearly 400 acre Glenhill Estate as a donation by Mary Behrend in memory of her husband Ernst, co-founder of the Hammermill Paper Company. It was October 30, 1948 when the Glenhill Farm was officially dedicated as a Penn State facility. The anniversary of this date is commemorated as Behrend Founder’s Day, a day which was first Behrend’s birthday.
Anti-hazing law enacts stricter criminal penalties

On February 4, 2017, 19-year-old Tim Piazza died in a Greek Life hazing ritual at Penn State University Park. Piazza’s untimely death stirred a movement across the state, and now over a year later a bill has been signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf.
11 dead in Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue shooting

Last Saturday, Robert D. Bowers, 46, entered a synagogue and opened fire, killing 11 congregants and wounding six others, including four police officers. Bowers was injured and is charged with 29 criminal counts and a number of state charges, according to the New York Times.
SGA informs campus of PA Good Samaritan Laws

Behrend open house promotes cmampus life

Fall is in full swing, meaning high school students are evaluating their options regarding the college they will eventually attend. Penn State Behrend hosted an open house on Saturday for students to get a first impression of the campus. There were many people in attendance, as they packed into McGarvey Commons for check in.
Presidential visit energizs both political sides of Erie

President Donald Trump visited Erie, Pennsylvania for the second time last Wednesday, the first being back in 2016, for which it was reported that nearly 8,000 people were in attendance. The campaign rally was held at the Erie Insurance Arena and began at the scheduled time of 7 p.m.
Behrend students take on Beijing in the Spring

The Office of Educational Equity and Diversity Program has announced that they will be taking students on a trip abroad to visit Beijing. On Wednesday Andy Herrera held two information sessions on this year's planned excursion. The meetings were held at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Reed 150.

Loss of Elements leaves room for improvment, criticism

This year, the Elements Café, which was located in the Behrend science complex, was removed from the facility on campus. According to Mr. Mike Lindner, Director of Housing and Food Services, the café was not a resourceful option for students who frequent that area of campus.

Behrend sppoints new director for the School of Engineering

As of July 2018, the Behrend School of Engineering appointed a new director.
The role of director has been an interim position for the last few years, since Chancellor Ralph Ford vacated the position in 2015. However, this has changed, since Timothy Kurzweg, Ph.D., was chosen for the position after a lengthy hiring process.
Greek Organizations push spring recruitment

Housing and Food Services improves campus experience

While everyone was home for the summer, Behrend Housing and Food Services was busy getting the new food truck, the Behrend Clipper, ready for first week of classes and updating the various dorms and suites on campus. There have also been several changes to Dobbins Dining, including the elimination of trays.
