When the movie “Tomb Raider” released in the theater, it must have been exciting news for those who play video games. This movie is largely based on the 2013 video game of the same name and applies some similar elements from the video game.

Richard Croft, who owned many corporations, left his beloved daughter Lara Croft in London for seven years and never came back. Richard tended to destroy all the research about Himiko, the mythical Queen of Yamatai and declared to control evil power over life and death. However, his plan failed and isolated in the island where was the location of Himiko’s tomb and never go home. As Lara grew up, she followed a pre-recorded message from her dad to the island and tried to figure out what happened to her dad. So she traveled to Hong Kong, hired Lu Ren, the captain of ship Endurance and sailed into the Devil’s sea. However, Lara wasn’t that lucky, and the ship suffered a storm and wrecked on a reef. She was washed ashore and went into a coma. When she woke up, she was prisoned by Mathias Vogel, the leader of a organization that camping out on the island called Trinity. This organization wanted to dig Himiko’s tomb for power and wealth which was against the principle with Richard that not reveal the Himiko to the world and keep it in secret. Lara escaped from the camp with Lu Ren’s assistance and met her dad on the island unexpected. When Richard heard that his research about Himiko is obtained by Mathias, and was because of Lara’s visit. He was upset about Lara, and he thought Lara would never come after him. But, with Lara’s courage and intelligence, she and her dad finally destroyed the tomb and all the researches, and rescued all the fisherman that prisoned by Trinity.

“Tomb Raider”, as an action movie, is also successful in fostering the characteristics for every character in the movie. The main character, Lara Croft, is brave and intelligent. Most importantly, director Roar Uthaug successfully sets up this character by introducing her emotions toward her father. She had a close relationship with her father when she was a child. Because of the elderly death of Lara’s mother, father was the only one she could relied on. After the disappearance of her father, she never lost the hope of his survival. Even though everybody in this world hold the truth that Richard has gone, Lara still have the faith that her father is alive since he promised Lara to come back. The emotion between the father and daughter is the most successful part in this movie. At the end of the movie, Lara has meet maybe the most difficult choice in her life: to save the world or to save the world. The result is that she followed her father’s word and left the tomb reluctantly. It is so hard to image how Lara felt in that moment. Her father disappear for seven years and finally she found him but it was the last time to see him. The strong emotion and the sprit of sacrifice on them deeply touched my heart and raised the film to a higher perspective--instead of actions, it also focusing on emotions.
