The Babysitter movie review

“The Babysitter,” directed by McG, was released Friday, October the 13th of this year on Netflix. The  horror/comedy stars Judah Lewis, Samara Weaving, Bella Thorne and many more. The story is about a 12 year old boy named Cole and his babysitter named Bee. They have a very close relationship, as she’s close with the entire family. Cole’s friend Melanie tells him to stay up one night after Bee puts him to bed to find out what babysitters do after they put the kids asleep. Cole and Melanie just expected her to have her boyfriend over for sex but instead he is shocked to find out that she’s a part of a satanic cult.

The movie’s lighting and music make it very suspenseful.  It keeps you on the edge of your seat—you never know what’s coming. If you’re a fan of gore and blood, you will love it. Although it may be scary, The Babysitter does have humor incorporated in it as well which lightens the mood. It was in no way what I would call a good movie, but if you’re looking for something entertaining to watch with friends, this is a good choice. It definitely has a shock factor to it in the beginning that will take some off guard, especially not knowing the premise of the movie.

Surprisingly enough, it received a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and 61% of the audience liked it. One critic, John Lui said: “There are a few good pop-culture gags here, but it is the strong central performances of Weaving as the hottie and Lewis as the nerd that elevate this to more than just an exercise in ironic B movie-making.” On the other hand, critic Jacob Knight had a different take on it: “Perhaps the most infuriating element of ‘The Babysitter’ is that it feels like a horror movie made by someone who doesn’t necessarily like horror movies, and is taking this odd opportunity to sort of laugh at the genre.” Both of these reviews are weirdly accurate to how the movie made you feel--it had a slightly above average B-movie feel to it but was also sort of a sick joke. Many will enjoy; many will hate.

Though the blood and gore can make audiences sick to their stomachs, at the same time, its suspense makes it hard to stop watching. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend for people with weak stomachs but if you can handle it--go for it.
