On October 2nd one Jamal Khashoggi walked into the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey, and never walked out. Jamal Khashoggi a journalist for the Washington Post entered the Saudi Arabian consulate to obtain papers to marry his fiance Hatice Cengiz. The Washington Post journalist who had been covering Saudi Arabian politics for years, had moved to the U.S. last year, after having a falling out from the local government. In the safety of America Khashoggi continued to write about the Arabian government and their constricting laws surrounding speech.

Khashoggi was in Turkey with his fiance Cengiz to obtain papers of his official divorce so they could marry later on in the Month. Khashoggi entered the building at 3:14 p.m. with Cengiz waiting outside, but twelve hours later it became apparent, Khashoggi was never going to come out.

As investigations started, several rumors came out, and the Saudi government denied all wrong doing. The most gruesome being that after Khashoggi was killed he was dismembered and removed from the consulate one bag at a time. As the Turkish officials continued to investigate the claims of murder, the statements provided by the Saudi government continued to change.

The story has slowly evolved from, “He never entered” to he entered through the rear doors and so there is no way to know what happened to him, and most recently admitting he died inside the consulate but it was in no way the government's fault but rather rouge vigilanties. The cover of the murder even appears to have gone as far as dressing a look alike in the clothes Khashoggi wore into the consulate.

The world has taken notice of the incident and waits to see what will happen in the aftermath. How Turkey leaders handle Saudi Arabia's discretion will set a precedent for other embassies and consulates.

The results of the horrific incident has affected more than just the journalism world. For instance the U.S. Treasury of Secretary and several finance ministers from the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and France have all pulled out of a business conference.

Western Leaders are also calling for answers German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected announced,  "From Saudi Arabia, we expect transparency in terms of death and background. Those responsible must be held accountable. The information given at the consulates in Istanbul is insufficient”. Even President Trump has spoken out against the actions that took place
