Bringing Behrend’s attention to organizations beyond the plethora that we are lucky enough to have on campus. There are a vast number of groups in the area that are always both serving the needs of the community and accepting volunteers. Whether this sparks your interest for the assets you need or those you are able to provide, never forget to look further than what is readily available!

Organization: SafeNet

Mission: “SafeNet is a nonprofit organization providing free confidential services to victims of domestic violence. SafeNet, Erie’s only accredited domestic violence agency, offers options and builds on strengths that assists in restoring lives. We are committed to ending domestic violence, affirming human dignity and delivering comprehensive direct services to victims of domestic violence. We believe every individual has the right to be respected and to live a life free from abuse.”

Opportunities: SafeNet provides sanctuary, support, education, advocacy, and promotes changes in legislation and social policies.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month! There are multiple upcoming events and activities to promote awareness and support the cause. There is a month-long fundraiser, The Purple Purse Challenge, in which domestic violence focused non-profits are united in competition (donate at crowdrise.com/SafeNetErie). There is a costumed 5k “Boo Run” happening on Presque Isle on Sunday, October 28 benefitting the organization (application forms available on website or by request).
