Bringing Behrend’s attention to organizations beyond the plethora that we are lucky enough to have on campus. There are a vast number of groups in the area that are always both serving the needs of the community and accepting volunteers. Whether this sparks your interest for the assets you need or those you are able to provide, never forget to look further than what is readily available!

Organization: Mercy Center for Women

Mission: As a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, the center is “committed to enhancing the dignity of each person they serve through healing of body, mind and spirit.” The center aims to empower women to become self-sufficient through supportive services.

Services: The center provides case management, safe and supportive transitional housing, education, life skills, and further transitional connections. There are self-esteem, healthy relationship, effective communication, relapse prevention, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and anger management programs as well. Dress for Success Erie stems from the Mercy Center and is designed to help women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Volunteer opportunities: Anyone looking to aid the center can inquire about serving as receptionists, preparing bulk mail, organizing group fundraisers, helping with childcare, providing maintenance, delivering educational speeches, serving as a clothing room attendant or personal clothing consultant. There is also the option to apply for an internship or work study program. As with almost any organization, the Mercy Center is always accepting donations and is currently hosting a Holiday Wreath Sale (ending November 2).

Location: 1039 East 27th Street, Erie, PA 16504

Contact information: Reach the center by phone at (814) 455-4577 or fill out a contact form online at www.mcwerie.org.

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement is also teeming with information regarding other organizations in the area and would be more than happy to discuss any questions you may have or help facilitate connections. Feel free to reach out to the office, located in the Smith Chapel, at 814-898-6609 or by email at psbservice@psu.edu.
