The library outreach team hosted another game night in the Lilley Library last Tuesday night. Librarians Russell Hall and Stephanie Diaz organized this event, providing free pizza to the faculty, staff and students who attended. Starting at six p.m., the game night had nearly thirty people in attendance. Games ranged from classics, such as connect four, to more strategic-based.

“We like to have fun too, it’s not all about work,” said Hall. Hall stated that the library outreach team aims to make the library feel more welcoming to students and to show students that it can be about fun and not just studying. Hall also claimed that students have shown improvement in classes after participating in an on-campus event in which their professor was also present.

To promote this event as well as others that are coming up, the library outreach team turned to digital signage around campus, where students can look to find pictures from this event. They also send out emails. Certain professors that the team knew would attend and those who host classes in the library were asked to tell their classes.

Yesterday, an email was sent to students that relays information about the movie nights that the library outreach team has been planning for some time. Diaz stated that the library outreach team had hopes of showing a movie in the library each week, free to students. The first movie night will be on Wednesday, October 10 where the movie Split will be streamed through a free movie streaming service. Following this, each Wednesday until Halloween has a movie scheduled to be shown, with the cinema classic Halloween being shown on Halloween. The movie nights are going to take place in room 107 of the library at 3:30 p.m. Students are encouraged to check their emails or talk to a librarian for more information on these events.

The library outreach team is also in the early stages of planning for an escape room, also hosted in the library. The escape room will be “Russian and campus themed.” With the escape room, although not actually one room for safety reasons, the library outreach team hopes to teach students more about the library space, services and collections, but “in a fun way,” said Diaz.

Events around campus can be very beneficial to students as it gives them time to relax and meet new people. The library outreach team is doing their part in keeping students involved on campus and providing them with a means of fun, as well as some learning.
