How to be single on Valentine's Day

Do you find yourself surrounded by single people pining for a Valentine year to year? Valentine’s Day is this week which typically celebrates relationships across the nation. Even though this is a holiday to bring couples and people together it is hard not to find the loneliness within all the aisles of flowers, boxed chocolates, and plush stuffed animals. For people who are single this day might be just another day or even a dreaded day.

Most people do want to be loved by a significant other and the fact that singles do not have one on a day that supposedly celebrates love makes their yearning to be cared for, loved,or even spoiled that more evident. To truly celebrate or even get by the holiday “of love” we singles need to look at it from a different perspective. Because let's face it - finding a valentine within a couple days or hours is primarily saved for the movies.

Valentine’s Day according to its history is not just a day for the love birds. The true celebration is based around love and affection. Love and affection does not just encompass romantic couples but also friends, family, and self love. For example, I have never had a romantic Valentine but I always manage to send my love to friends and family through chocolates, most of the time, and even indulge in some myself. Valentine’s Day is not just limited to the lovers; celebrate friendship. Show your friends how much they mean to you because friends are a major support system, especially if you are a student whose family is far away.

Singles are also so keen on having a Valentine but are reluctant to make one. Ask someone to be your Valentine because no one said that you have to wait to be asked. Giving out flowers and chocolates seems to be just as rewarding as getting gifts during this time. So send flowers or even a card to a fellow single on Valentine’s Day. Dig out the old address book and send something to your grandma or grandpa, aunt or uncle, or even your siblings. Make the day a little more bearable to the people who are just like you. Let them know they are loved, even if they already know so.

Being single on Valentine’s Day can be nice because singles can avoid the stress that comes along with this holiday season. We are able to sit back and relax with no pressure to spend money and create an elaborate Valentine for our significant other. Instead we can enjoy the discount chocolates and candies that immediately go on sale after the day passes for ourselves.

Celebrate this lovable holiday with your friends, family, or even yourself. Keep yourself open to the idea of asking someone and spreading some love by sending a card or flowers to anyone you care for. This holiday has become so narrowed down to just couples when in reality Valentine’s Day was designated to show affection no matter who the person is. So show some love this Valentine’s Day and become a lovable single.
