Take back the "slut"

The “SlutWalk” is a transitional movement created by Amber Rose. She is an American model and actress and is known for being extremely open about her sexuality stating that she can be in love with either man or woman and can find beauty in anybody. She grew up in South Philadelphia and started stripping at the age of 15 to provide for her family after the divorce of her parents. She has been criticized in the media and has been slut-shamed and reports back to an incidence that occurred when she was 14 in school where a boy tricked her in a game called “7 minutes in heaven.” She ended up being humiliated and that started her desire to speak out for women that have ever been slut-shamed.

Two years ago, in October, Amber started her “SlutWalk” to honor all women that have been judged for their sexual behaviors just as she had been. It was organized in Toronto, Ontario and over 3000 people showed up at Queen’s Park. It’s a “day festival filled with many cool activities, contests and giveaways, vendors, speakers, panelist, performances, live DJs, sign making, educational booths, photo fun, free breast cancer exams, HIV testing, and much more” based off her website.

Rose also spoke out about her personal experiences during the day to shine light on the crowd. Their mission is “No more sexual violence. No more victim blaming. No more derogatory labels. No more gender inequality.” Events like this have been happening all around the world starting quite a few years ago, women dressing how they want to in public carrying signs like “Still Not Asking For It” to prove that rape and assault is and never will be the fault of the victim no matter what they wear or how they act. Her event has zero tolerance of bad language, racism, sexism or anything else stemmed from hate. The walk this year was on October 1st downtown Los Angeles and her partner, 21 Savage, walked with her carrying a sign saying “I’m a hoe too.” This got a lot of media attention because women are always being called “sluts” but men that have a lot of sex are usually just applauded or not thought of twice. It’s a double standard Amber hopes to get rid of. To learn more, she offers subscription to her newsletter on her website: http://amberroseslutwalk.com/
