Penn State Behrend open house brings perspective students

Penn State Behrend's Open House was this past Saturday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to12 p.m.

Families checked in at a table right in front of McGarvey Commons, then explored all the stations inside to learn more about Behrend. The tables featured the schools of Humanities and Social Sciences, Samuel and Irene Black School of Business, School of Engineering and Nursing. The fair wasn’t limited to the featured school tables with information on things such as Housing and Food Service, Health and Wellness, Personal Counseling, Learning Resource Center, Academic and Career Planning Center, Information Technology Services and Financial Aid. Student Activities, Residence Life, Educational and Diversity Programs, along with Athletics, Honors and ROTC also made an appearance at the fair. Visitors were also welcome to help themselves to a food and beverage station.

Campus tours started at 8:30 a.m. and went until noon, each lasting about an hour. The tour locations were in the Reed Union Building, Wintergarden Balcony and 001/002 Burke. Housing tours started at 9 a.m. and ran until noon. They took about 15 minutes each. The tour featured the amenities offered in Perry Hall.

There were two admission sessions where high school students found out how to apply to Penn State and how decisions are made, along with other tips. The first admission session was held at 9:30 a.m. in 117 Reed and the second was held in 180 Burke at noon. There was also an individual question session in the Metzgar Center from noon to 1 p.m. There were academic information sessions all around campus from 9 a.m. until noon where families and prospective students could meet with faculty members and staff to learn about majors, minors and certificates.

The School of Science teachers were located in Roche Hall, School of Humanities and Social Sciences in Kochel. The School of Engineering and the Black School of Business were located in Burke. There were also numerous academic presentations going on such as in 180 Burke, the School of Engineering had one at 9:30 am and one at 11 a.m., and the Black School of Business had one at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Prospective students could go on lab tours and tours of the advanced manufacturing and innovation center.

The School of Humanites and Social Sciences had their presentation at 10:30 a.m. in 043 Kochel center. The nursing program also presented information at 10:30 a.m., but in 185 Benson, Roche Hall. There, you could learn about the benefits of achieving a 4-year Baccalaureate Nursing Degree. The Pre-Health program presentation was at 10:30 a.m. in 21 Witkowski in the science complex building. The final presentation was the honors program at 11:30 a.m. in the Metzgar Center where prospective students learned about requirements and the Schreyer Honors College.

Families could also eat at the Behrend Clipper, Dobbins Hall, Paws or Bruno’s café throughout open house.
