President Barron shares message about Charlottesville

President Eric Barron sent out a message to all Penn State students about the recent Charlottesville events.

President Barron discussed in his message that the University places high value on First Amendment rights but what was saw in Charlottesville, Virginia was not that. He describes what was shown on the media as hatred, bigotry and violence and that a peaceful community has been terrorized. He stressed the value of diversity and ensures that Penn State is a safe and open-minded community.

Rena Gerber, a junior Interdisciplinary Business with Engineering Studies major, shares that Charlottesville events are close to home for her family. She states, “I think the event is disgusting and as a Jewish woman, I’m terrified. It’s good to know that the University agrees and is for diversity.”

He also gave advice on how students can help.

He stated, “I ask all of you to reach out to people different from yourself, listen to new perspectives, and embrace your fellow Penn Staters and neighbors.”

Senior student Brandon Moten shared his views on the President’s message. He said, “I think Barron’s comments on Charlottesville was not significant enough and was not from the heart but at the same time I agree with some of the words about commitment to diversity.”

President Barron closed his message with “Thank you for your support.”
