Banana is a bad breakfast option

Have you ever got up late and there is no time left for breakfast after getting dressed? You just grab a banana from the kitchen counter and devour it on the way to school or workplace. Mandy Yi, sophomore Communications major said, “When I have early classes, I always eat a banana on the bus to school. Why? I think it’s much easier to eat a banana than an apple or a peach. I don’t need to spend time washing it, just peel it and chew. And of course, bananas taste good.”

You may think that a banana is the perfect choice for a quick breakfast, because it’s healthy and gives an energy boost in the morning. However, some nutritionists ruin your belief and point out that eating a banana as the first meal of a day is not as good as you think. Bananas are made up of a high amount of sugar, which means that the sugar rush comes immediately, but also crashes very soon. Having a banana for breakfast will only temporarily fill you up with energy and leave you feeling sleepy and tired later without pairing with another healthy fat such as nuts and avocado.

A well-known nutritional expert named Dr. Daryl Gioffre said, "Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning. But with a closer look, you'll find that bananas eaten alone aren't the best option because they're 25 percent sugar and moderately acidic. Without balancing this banana breakfast with a healthy fat, many of banana’s benefits are lost, while spikes in blood sugar and acid are gained."

As Dr. Gioffre mentions, bananas also influence your digestive system negatively. He claims, “When sugar is consumed in any form, it undergoes the process of fermentation, like beer and wine, and turns into acid and alcohol in your body. This clogs up your digestive system.”

Furthermore, Dr. Gioffre also mentions that bananas are especially bad for people who love working out or marathons. "Because it's sugar. So when exercising, again, always avoid sugar," Dr Gioffre said.

According to Dr. Gioffre’s notion, eating something else at the same time of having a banana as breakfast will be a good option. For example, some peanut butter or spices will help to neutralise the acid and slower the metabolism process of sugar to delay a crash. So next time you go to grab a banana for breakfast as you are on your way out the door, you may want to think twice.
