10th Anniversary IPhone Rumors

Every year, there is always a lot of buzz in the tech world about what advancements the newest iPhone may have. Lately however, there seems to be just as much interest in what Apple may decide to remove from the latest version of their devices, rather than what they’ll add.

The removal of the headphone jack from last years’ iPhone 7 sparked a lot of controversy. Many consumers still insist that they would not buy a device without the seemingly timeless plug. However, since the iPhone 7’s release, there have been several other smartphones with the same omission, creating a clear trend that the headphone jack is being phased out.

The iPhone 8, of course, will not have a headphone jack. Additionally, there are rumors that Apple will remove the home button, replacing it with onscreen controls similar to those of current Android devices. The fingerprint scanner present in the home button of past iPhones may now be moved to the power button, replaced with a face recognition security feature or somehow placed inside the display.

The removal of the home button provides a lot of extra room for the iPhone 8’s screen. It is likely to be an edge-to-edge display, much more so than past iterations of the device. The screen size is hard to guess at, but it is likely to stay approximately the same as last year, with options being the 4.7-inch display, the 5.5-inch display for the ‘plus’ model and a new 5.8-inch quad HD display . However, due to the lack of a home button, the overall device size may be somewhat smaller, and therefore easier to hold with one hand.

The cameras are also likely to be a big change for the new devices. Four lenses, two on the front and two on the back, will provide wide-angle functionality and lossless zoom like in the iPhone 7. The front cameras may also include 3D sensing capabilities, which could become more useful as virtual reality becomes more popular.

Finally, there are some hints that the price of the latest iPhone will be increased, up to $1,000 for the most expensive model making it approximately an $100 increase from the top 7 model. Although it is clear that there are plenty of people who will put down $700 for a new iPhone, it remains to be seen where that limit lies, and if the new device will ultimately be different enough from previous models to be worth it.

For official details on the long awaited device, we will have to wait for Apple’s unveiling event, which is usually sometime in September.
