"Sev & Liv's Guide to Dating" on BVZ Radio

BVZ Radio hosts a multitude of shows which address a variety of platforms--from music appreciation to NPR-inspired live sessions.

Alyson “Sev” Munson and Olivia “Liv” Wickline’s radio show, “Sev & Liv’s Guide to Dating,” is no exception to this variety, as they tackle common relationship problems on the college dating scene.

Munson and Wickline, both junior Communications majors began their radio show as a requirement for their major.  Having met while writing for the newspaper, the two friends decided to take the radio practicum together because of their natural chemistry and their love of, as they put it, “jabbering on.”

“We were like, ‘well we both talk...so let’s do radio together!’” explained Munson.

The show’s premise came from Wickline and Munson’s opposite perspective on their dating experiences.

“We have two very different outlooks on relationships.  We both were in the same boat, but then she ended up getting a boyfriend. So commitment is chill with her, but I am very anti-commitment,” said Wickline on how the radio show came to be.  “It’s essentially just the parallels of our views on relationships”

“And even though this is my first real relationship that I’m in now, I feel like I’m really good with relationship advice, so I like when people ask me for it,” added Munson.

Using this premise, the show addresses a new topic every week, giving Munson and Wickline the opportunity to present their differing opinions on college dating and relationship advice.

This Wednesday, the girls were host to fellow Communications major Rachel Cotton as she described her experience using popular dating app Tinder. After Cotton spoke about finding relationship happiness on the app, Munson and Wickline addressed popular Tinder anxieties, such as how to curate the most successful profile and how to handle the anxiety and awkwardness of seeing someone you’ve matched with in real life.

Throughout the rest of the semester, Wickline and Munson will be addressing relevant topics that seem to be popular dating concerns.  However, both strive to make the show’s content accessible and relatable.

“I feel like a lot of the time--especially when you’re talking about relationships and stuff in college--a lot of people feel like, ‘I’m the only one who feels this way,’” said Wickline.

The overall goal of the show, however, is to expand to topics that may be less common, while also acknowledging common problems that are more serious--like self-sabotage, relationship anxiety or even fear of commitment.

“We talk about a lot of topical things--like Tinder and what we’re attracted to in boys--but there’s also an underlying ‘you can appreciate these things and still be afraid of them,’” said Wickline.

The most important advice that they offer, however, is to not take dating too seriously.

“We’re all out here trying to live, trying to date, trying to be in relationships,--well, some of us--and nobody really knows what they’re doing,” said Munson. “I think that might be our show tagline:  ‘Nobody actually knows what they’re doing.’”

Catch “Sev & Liv’s Guide to Dating” every Wednesday evening from 7 - 8 p.m. through BVZ on TuneIn Radio.
