Google's New Gadgets

In 2016, after numerous partnerships with other handset makers such as LG, Huawei and HTC, Google decided to launch its own smartphone called the Pixel. Google’s production of its own hardware is not only a shift to keep up with the times and move with the market, but also a way to improve the quality of their products rapidly.

This is how Apple has managed to dominate the smartphone game, by producing its own hardware and software. Hardware and software go hand in hand and rely on one another to provide an overall wholesome and satisfying experience for the consumer. While the software is being modified, the hardware can be adjusted to fit the functions of the software. Moreover, Google’s prior partnerships with other tech companies served as good experience for them to learn a thing or two about producing smartphones.

Recently, Google has announced the launch of its new line of products that include two upgraded versions of its smartphone, home speakers, and a laptop. The two new smartphones, aptly named the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, come in either 5.5 inch or 6 inch displays. Similar to the LG V30 smartphone it is based on, the 6 inch Pixel 2 has a plastic-OLED (organic light emitting diode) curved display which takes up almost the entire width of the phone. The device differs with the first Pixel phone in that it features an always-on display of the lock screen notifications, even when the device is locked. The Pixel 2 can recognize background music and displays it on the lock screen so you are always aware of what is playing. The AI (artificial intelligence) of this smartphone, the Google Assistant, can be activated by squeezing the sides of the phone, a feature borrowed from the HTC U11.

Google is also jumping on the wireless earbud band wagon, excluding an earphone jack in the new line of phones. To pair with their jackless smartphones, Google has produced the Pixel Buds. The Pixel Buds are connected with a chord so there’s a lesser chance of losing only one of them. Not only do they provide high quality audio and fit nicely in the ear, but they also come with a Google Translate feature that can connect to the Google Assistant.

It sounds like something straight out of science fiction movie, but the Pixel Buds can provide real-time translations through Google Translate. This could be revolutionary to the future of humanity, language barriers will no longer exist and the mobility across borders would be much easier and convenient. Aside from the translation feature, a press (and hold) of the right earbud can activate the Google Assistant. With the Pixel Buds, consumers can control the volume as well as pause and play by swiping and tapping on the earbud.

Additionally, Google has launched their Daydream View, a VR (virtual reality) headset. It has a comfortable design, uses soft, breathable materials and comes with a controller. The Daydream View is also portable and only needs a Daydream-ready phone to work. Other people can get in on the action and see what you see by streaming the video on Chromecast and displaying it on a TV.

These are just a few of the products that Google has released, but many anticipate the release of more tricks they have up their sleeves.
