Teigen speaks out on postpartum depression

A common perception that the public has on celebrities is that they have perfect life and do not go through struggles like “regular people” do. Although it may be the case for some celebrities, it is not the case for model and television personality Chrissy Teigen.

She recently opened up about her struggles with postpartum depression after giving birth to her daughter, Luna. According to the National Institute of Medical Health, “postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can affect women after childbirth. Mothers with postpartum depression experience feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that may make it difficult for them to complete daily care activities for themselves or for others.”

After years of trying In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Teigen finally got pregnant in 2015, but it was not smooth sailing from there.  After welcoming her baby, she was suddenly hit with emotions of sadness and helplessness. As stated in a US Magazine article, Teigen said that she lost all interest in everything and got to the point where she couldn’t get out of bed, and put resorted to putting on her pajamas in the pantry in order to avoid going upstairs. She laid on the couch not wanting to do anything, and had her baby taken care of by a nanny. All of these experiences only made her feel worse because she knows how privileged she is, and her emotions made her feel like a “bitch” because of her privileges.

Her husband, musician John Legend, said that it was a struggle to be a good partner and help Teigen get through her depression. During the holidays last year, they went to a doctor, and Teigen was diagnosed with postpartum depression. They then followed steps in order to help Teigen deal with her hardship. After a lot of psychologically draining work, Teigen was able to see the light that she had lost. She later stated that the good thing is that now she knows how to catch it sooner and what it feels like.

The couple, who froze their embryos years ago when they were struggling to get pregnant, are now ready to embark into a new journey and give Luna a little brother. In an interview Teigen gushed about her husband saying, “How would I not want to expand my family with this beautiful person? He’s just everything.”

Although celebrities do have certain privileges and luxuries that others do not, they still go through issues like everyone else. Teigen learned from her experience as we all do and in her own words, “Now I know how to catch it quicker.”
