Trump vs. Freedom of Press

In America, the Freedom of Press has been a right that few have argued should be retracted.

Freedom of Press is one right that Americans have held dear to their hearts starting all the way from the original thirteen colonies. In recent years, many freedoms have been encroached upon in the name of public safety. The Right to Bear Arms, and Rights to Privacy just to name a few.

However, the Freedom of Press seemed to be untouchable due to some unsaid rule. That is until President Trump was elected into office. In the last few days, Trump has begun another personal vendetta, this time against the National Broadcasting Company (NBC).

In the past week Trump has had trouble with the NBC, citing them for creating “fake news” in their report of his claims of wanting to increase the United States Nuclear arsenal.  These claims were quickly denied by Trump, who would go on to say, “It’s frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write and people should want to look into it”.

It is unclear on how Trump believed that the public would react to his comments, but frankly it is outrageous to hear these words be spoken by the head of government. The President is supposed to represent and embody the ideals of our Nation, and the Freedom of Press is one of the highest held ideals in our history. To hear a man in his position call for reporting on information, even incorrect information, to be censured is almost reminiscent of behaviors associated to that of a man who is beginning to go mad with power.

It also makes people begin to fear what Trump plans for the future if he continues to lash out and criticize anyone that critiques Trump.  It is behavior like this that are making people begin to question how long Trump can last the full length of his Presidential term.

One person in particular, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, has “reportedly told people that he thinks President Donald Trump has just a 30 percent chance of completing his four-year term”.

It is also reasonable to mention that there has been a steadfast past of decline of approval for the President. In recent months with his approval rating dropped a solid 10 points from the month of January all the way to September to conclude for a total of a 43 percent approval rating, according to a recent poll that was released by the Morning Consult.

In his defense though, the President has been able to raise his approval from July during which he had an approval rating of 36 percent, which marked the “lowest approval ratings of any President in the seven decades at this point in his tenure,” according to Time.

It is because of these ratings that also help give fire to the argument that he might not be able to the last the full four years. So, because of the ever-increasing fiasco inside the White House, and the complete disregard of one of the most sacred of all ideals in American culture, it is of no surprise that unless Trump changes his behavior drastically he will go down in history as a President who has been steeped in more controversy since the time of Nixon.
