Club and Greek life are sometimes an afterthought for college students. There is so much stress with picking your major, and then your classes, and then the actual work in class. By the time the school day is over and all your homework is done, usually you just want to relax.

Typically, clubs and Greek life can look like more work than excitement. However, if chosen properly, they can be essential to your college career. For starters, many grad schools and employers look at involvement with your school. Luckily, Behrend offers plenty of clubs that will look beneficial on applications. Young Entrepreneurism, International Student Organization, along with Networking & Interviewing Strategies are all 3 valuable clubs to add on a resume. Not only does it look good, it will genuinely help with future endeavors.

In addition to clubs, Greek life is offering “frats” under the same idea. Behrend has business fraternities to basically supply the same help. Aside from upping your professional development and networking, Behrend offers social development with certain clubs, as well as with Greek life.

Research has shown that joining clubs for social reasonings has a greater effect than professional. With professional development you may learn how to create conversation with employers, but social circumstances help you build interaction in a more casual and personable way. Many clubs are based on group discussions of shared interests, as well as giving opportunities for board positions which push leadership skills. These positions often put members in situations where they need to talk on command, without practicing anything. Additionally, social interaction, especially with people who share your interests, helps relieve stress and anxiety which is something a majority of college students endure.

Greek life on Behrend gives an opportunity to build social interaction and friendships with a broad range of people. Alpha Sigma Alpha, otherwise known as ASA, is a popular sorority on the PSB campus. Jill Swan, sophomore Political Science major and member of ASA, says that her sorority has given her sisters, literally and hypothetically.

“I have the largest support system one could ever imagine. This is important, especially in college. I love my sorority because I love my friends,” she states. “The girls make it all worth it.” ASA has created a positive presence in its members lives by giving them something every college kid needs but doesn’t always have - a support system and friends that feel like family.

It’s just as important to create these social developments that ASA members are creating, as well as professional. However, at Behrend you don’t need to settle. Some clubs even do both! Specifically, the Women Today club is a club looking for all genders to join and learn more about past and current female struggles. They strive to empower and inspire women, as well as extend their love and inclusion to all people. They look to educate and learn together through events and discussion-based gatherings. In clubs like these, members get to create professional development on something that interests them, while also gaining that social interaction due to its casual setting. There are many clubs at PSB that strive to create the best possible student, and it’s important to look into those options and see if they benefit you and your future.
