Off-campus organization spotlight: Asbury Woods

Bringing Behrend’s attention to organizations beyond the plethora that we are lucky enough to have on campus. There are a vast number of groups in the area that are always both serving the needs of the community and accepting volunteers. Whether this sparks your interest for the assets you need or those you are able to provide, never forget to look further than what is readily available!

 

Organization: Asbury Woods

 

Mission: Provide all members of the community with meaningful environmental, educational and recreational experiences that inspire a greater sense of environmental awareness, sustainability and stewardship.

 

Services: The organization provides a diverse array of educational, environmental and recreational programming for schools, community groups, families and individuals of all ages. In addition, they manage and maintain 205 acres of preserved property which includes native species, old-growth forests, landscaped gardens, wetlands, boardwalk trails and dirt trails.

 

Involvement opportunities: There is a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, including visitor services, gardening, train maintenance, weekly work crew, animal care, summer camp assisting, festival assisting, education programming, working with the maple program, social media influencing, or visitor engagement. In addition, internships ranging in length from 12 weeks to 12 months are available for students in environmental science, biology, education, service, animal sciences, art, or any related field.
