Do you ever wonder what animals think of us, who made the bird bath, or why doing something is wrong in some places but normal in others? Well, Netflix just released Demitri Martin’s new stand-up special, “The Overthinker.” And as the title suggests, Demetri has had a lot to think about.

The hour-long special lives up to its’ title as Demetri points out how absurd the mundane actions of human beings really are. He does this by giving us scenarios where we see ourselves through the lens of animals or other people. But, as the special progresses Martin breaks further into the humorous elements of his creative imagination and pokes fun at other aspects of our society.

In one part, he explains that for animals, we people must look insane. Martin does this by pointing out that we humans venture into different environments, own other animals as pets, and then pick up the waste of our pets. Yet, it wouldn’t be good comedy if he came out and just said that, so Demetri Martin provides dialogue for the animals. In the case with dogs, about their owners: “Dude that’s my poop, leave it, you don’t want that.” Small lines such as this build up a sense of absurdity from things we perceive as mundane.

Demetri Martin also jokes about his shortcomings in working out, his ideas on how to reduce road rage, and his thoughts on questions from cashiers. There are however some jokes and bits of the show that fall short of comedic – sometimes amplified by Martin’s generally laid-back style.

The show also contains these inner monologues that occasionally come after a joke to support them; but they use up time that could have been better utilized. The same can be said about a collection of hand drawn pictures Demetri uses to support his jokes. Sometimes the illustration can make an entire bit better. However, for some of the weaker punchlines, the drawings tend to add insult to injury.

Demetri also makes use of a guitar, as a vast number of comics have done in the past with great success. But if the idea of listening to a monotone man with a guitar telling you “fun-facts” doesn’t sound good to you, then you won’t the final moments of the stand-up.

Overall, Demetri Martin’s Overthinker is a great watch if you have an hour to kill and want some silly humor. His comedic observations of our species, world, and himself will have you laughing and questioning your everyday routine.
